And now, hearts are red ? – Si acum , inimile sunt rosii ?

Dragobetele (Valentine`s Romanian version) approaches and I’m almost done with lavender sachets. For those who are hopeless romantics I did some bags with hearts and started another with Romanian traditional motifs .

Because the tradition of “martisoare“ is specific to our area and may you not know why I am so busy to prepare for first March, I will  refer to Wikipedia- what means martisor where you can read briefly about. Better to tell you a story about “martisoare“from my childhood.I admit, I have always liked the “martisor“ colourful joy .The nicest one, instead to give as a gift, I used to put away in a box to admire later. My little heart does not resist separating from those miniature beauties . After a while the little box mysteriously disappeared or maybe I forgot where I put it for the next year to appear like magic. Mom? Something to confess?

In recent years handmade products have gained ground again and Romanian artist’s creation are increasingly popular.

I would say that it’s ephemeral art because “martisor“ is worn pinned near to the heart or at the hand as a bracelet, just a few days (roughly from 1 March until 10 March) but I am happy to see that, when I manage to create a useful gift- martisor, it will be used all year. The best example is the one from last year, crocheted roses made of ombre wool to which I attached a clasp for brooches and then I saw these roses fondly worn on many occasions. I made a few this year.

I found a tradition very similar to that of Romaniaat the Bulgarians, our southern neighbors, the Macedonians and Greeks. Martenitsa (Bulgarian: мартеница, pronounced [martɛnit͡sa] Macedonian: мартинка, Greek: μάρτης, Romanian: mărţişor).

In early March after March 8 International Day Women and we celebrate especially our moms and March 9 – the day of 40 saints or martyrs) the white red threads from martisor are put to cling in the blossom  rees in faith that will bring us luck.

Martisoare this year are still in progress, I have some ideas. You can find them here but if you want to do it yourself leave a message here with what details you need.

Have a nice day ladies

Buna ziua doamnelor,

Recunosti ceva ?

Martenitsa (Bulgarian: мартеница, pronounced  [ˈmartɛnit͡sa]Macedonian: мартинка, Greek: μάρτης, Romanianmărțișor) .

Angels are blue- Ingerii sunt albastri

Happy Valentine’s Day! I hope that each of you has someone to think about today! A good thought for those who love us and especially support us.

Meanwhile I finished the large hearts, with lavender inside and they came out really nice to be modest!

A new lavender arrived, cultivated and raised in Romania and I finished the sachets ready for “martisor“ gifts , hand embroidered in cross point with little angels.

If you want to make some  yourself, take a piece  of cloth appropriate for cross-stitching , cut into pieces the size you wish to have the sachets -mine are 9 cm wide and 13 cm height , embroider what you want on one side, and then sew, put lavender inside, a cord and wrap as a gift .Can be useful gifts for your friends and why not, even for personal drawer.

In order to lavender not shake off; I put it in a paper towel first. So, even the smallest pieces will not come out from the sachet (it’s just a precaution) and in a year or two, the sachet can be reused for new lavender or what other herbs you want to use.

If you want, you can use sachets for jewellery, small gifts or favours at weddings (stuffed with herbs or candy), etc.

If you do not have time to make them, you can find sachets ready filled in my shop on Breslo.-luciavintagelace

You want a personalized set? Please let me a message.

Ingerii sunt albastri

Happy Valentine Day !

New Valentine Hearts- felt and hand embroidery/ Inimioare noi de Sfantul Valentin-din fetru, brodate manual

Good morning ,

Valentine’s Day is coming again, international (14 February) and our Romanian one, Dragobetele (24 February).

Even if there are always controversies to decide which of the two days are suitable for a declaration of love we found way to “reconcile goat and cabbage“  (the story of this proverb to be found here) meaning we celebrate both .The girls prepare the most beautiful smiles to receive hearts from their boyfriends (husbands ) and the boys will have the opportunity to show how romantic they are and will be invitations for a drink, or if you are not a student, even at a restaurant, flowers and more (not to be publicized here ).

For this year Valentine day, I prepared felt hearts, red of course, embroidered with silver metallic thread and blanket stitched edges with white (DMC). Only 12 small pieces yet ready but I prepared slightly larger version (in work).

Can be used as Key ring,  Charm for memory sticks or for bags, hanging from the rear-view mirror of the car, or wherever you want and you will always have in front of your eyes a nice heart (with small patch because we all have brave hearts that went through more).

If you want to make your own, you can easily cut two red felt hearts (any color is just as good), about 6 cm height and 8 cm wide, cut a piece of ribbon 0.5 cm wide, long 16 cm and looking for a bit stuffing for pillows,or if you don`t have , pharmacy cotton wool will do the same. See below front and back of the heart.

After you do nice embroidery with golden thread, silver or whatever you find in the box, starting to assembly those two pieces is simple. In blanket stitch I started to pin up ribbon, then continued with blanket stitch, up to ¾ total length. Here it is point where the needle is let down and you start filling until thickened heart is chubby and soft. If you’re having, you can sneak in there a few lavender flowers (1/2 teaspoon) – the little heart will smell nice and you have already a little secret. Blanket stitches to continue till the end and you have to add strengthens to ribbon area taking care not to become ugly.

And now, the “yesterday story“ about the meaning of goat and cabbage :

“ To reconcile goat and cabbage“ means making happy one and another when interests are opposed. Hungry goat needs to be fed and cabbage to escape in one piece.

A little hard to do, but hey, what is easy in life? If you sit and ponder a little, we are often in this situation and if we`re honest we can recognize that most times we need to get away uneaten. Probably coming from here is the expression: Man, you’re cabbage!! as a rude nickname for someone just not good at what he does.“

Have a great day ,ladies !

Valentine Day=Dragobete Day in Romania

Dragobete Day (Romanian Valentine Day) has very old roots, being celebrated even during the Dacians. Dragobetele is similar of the Roman Cupid and Eros.

Country people remember their old habit of adolescent girls and boys who went in to the woods to gather snowdrops, violets, incense, and put them to use for various charms of love.Towards noon, the girls raced to the village, each followed by the boy who loved them. After the girl was caught, the boy stoles a kiss in the open, which symbolize their love for the whole year.

It is also imperative 🙂  that in the Dragobete Day, men to be cordial relationships with females.Men are not allowed to bother women, nor to engage in quarrels or they will have bad luck all year. Both boys and girls have a duty to be happy on Dragobete day  to be loved throughout the year.

Field works, weaving, sewing, household heavy chores on Dragobete Day are not allowed. Instead, light cleaning can be done , considered that bring growth and freshness in your life .

You can not cry on Dragobete day. It is said that tears flowing in this day are bringing trouble and grief- in the coming months.

As you can see Valentine day is very similar to romanian Dragobete day (both celebrate love) the difference is just 10 days – from 14 February to 24 February and for a good measure the romanians celebrate both days with  same chocolate, flowers, and parties as everybody on the planet.

Happy Valentine Day to you all.h13-a

Valentine heart -Romanian point lace

Valentine Day  is not a romanian tradition but we have a very similar one on 24 February named Dragobete. The story about this tradition in my country will follow soon.

I was thinking what to do this year to celebrate the moment and of course what can be better than a heart ? A pillow with a heart 🙂

Romanian point lace heart in the middle of a decorative pillow is something that you can give to someone loved, appreciated or respected, for Valentine day, Mother day, 1 year day or …. anytime. Even on a T-shirt look nice. I will take a photo soon.

My dear husband liked a lot the drawing so for him is enough. My mother suggested to put the heart on a frame  ??!! What a good idea.

This is the first photo made after I did the pattern

heart 13-2

Final result

heart 13-1

I am happy with the result. More details to come.

RPL filling stitch for leaves-how to

Today I finished a new Romanian Point Lace pattern special for Valentine Day and when I did the pictures I thought of the big number of filling stitches that I use and sometimes I stay and think which one will look better.

Many  RPL (romanian point lace ) models have leaves or spaces that need to be filled in order to obtain a beautiful, delicate lace.  One of the most simple stitches is the infinite stich.

The name comes from the shape of  the stitch, like an horizontal eight- the sign of infinite. To realize this stitch ,insert the needle in the cord near the base of the leave (or space to be completed) and make two stitches behind the needle to secure the thread . From the base of the leave (left or right – as you feel comfortable) insert the needle in the lateral stitch of the cord from top – down with the thread over the needle held up  with the finger and go parallel ,to the opposite part and insert again the needle in same way . The thread will be held down toward the end of the leave at each stitch with the thumb and inserted in the lateral of  the cord .A finished leave bellow.

If the space is bigger and this stitch is not filling well the pattern ,you can pass to the next level and do a stitch over this one, in the middle (like a rib).

To do this stitch, start from the middle base(or top) of the leave and do one (or two)buttonhole stitches on the right and other one or two  to the left side keeping the stitches always in the middle .

I started from the top in this case and I did two stitches each side because the space between cords is equal from base to the top and quite wide. Finished it looks like this.

Romanian Point Lace  filling stitches are various and you can choose which ever you feel like. Even if the pattern has one specific filling feel free to change and experiment and in this way you will have a true piece of art with a little bit of your imagination and originality .

Cross stitch hearts pillow

A lovely cross stitch pillow with 12 hearts finished. Each one is different. Easy, fast and nice to do project.

Be careful to measure enough allowance around. I let about 15 points – pattern is 153/153, I calculated 183/183 and after another 2 cm all around. I started from left side down, made the frame first and then the heart. Colour is dark red 814 from DMC . I think that cream on white will look great too, or black… it will be a repeat for sure.

Beautiful pattern from

Thank you Marie.

I have a heart pattern collection and yours is on top.Good for Valentine gifts too, one heart for a small potpourri or a pin cushion.

Still have to do the actual pillow, now is just the front . In fact 3 or 4 ready to be done pillows wait on “to do“ list. I am at work from 7.30 to 17.30 and “to do“ list is loooong.

Have a nice day ladies.
